A tribute to Frank Andrews

Frank Andrews (1920 - 2015)

by Norman Field

Alas, Frank Andrews passed away in 2015. Sincere condolences to his family have been echoed by many all over the world, who have benefited and learned so much from his discographical researches and publications over a period of nearly 50 years. Frank consistently consulted prime sources, many of which were previously untapped. Trade mark registration ledgers, the entries at Companies House, the archives of Law Courts, Bankruptcy proceedings, Stationers’ Hall and other copyright archives, Phonograph and Gramophone Trade Journals, the EMI Archives and many more.

The results speak for themselves: below we append a selected bibliography compiled by Bill Dean-Myatt M. Phil. As for this modest web-site, very little indeed of it would exist without Frank’s work. There must be several hundred references to his writings here. Moreover, he was a man modest to a fault. Still, by his own admission, his first great moment of satisfaction was during researches on the famous ‘His Master’s Voice’ trade mark painting by Francis Barraud. Discovering that the painting had been copyrighted, Frank examined many hundreds of copyright registration records. Eventually he found Barraud’s application, which was, as expected, accompanied by a photograph of the original painting – which as you probably know, did not picture a brass-horned gramophone, but an Edison Commercial cylinder Phonograph! Frank was the first person to see this since it had been filed away in 1899, and it was soon published for us all in 1973. Few of us will ever make such a signal discovery; but every time we consult one of the countless articles and record listings he wrote and compiled, we nevertheless discover something we wanted to know.

Thank you very much indeed, Frank Andrews, for enabling us to do this.

Frank Andrews - a selected bibliography

by Bill Dean-Myatt, M. Phil

Readers of For the Record are used to reading discographies and articles about record company history. They may be surprised to see, possibly for the first time, a small, selected bibliography of Frank.

No one with an interest in records can fail to know of the immense amount of research that has been completed by our own Frank Andrews. His articles in a variety of magazines and journals must run in to hundreds while countless numbers of sleeve notes, books and article acknowledgments bear witness to the massive contribution he has made to providing the basic tools that enable us to have a fuller understanding of our hobby.
