Applying hospitality, tourism and events in consultancy

Two female students taking a card from a prospective employer

Final year BSc students apply their learning from the classroom to support the consultancy project including teamwork, client management, project planning and management, data analysis and interpretation. This is supported by outside speakers from industry including former students now working in key business consultancy roles.

Student teams collaborate closely with business stakeholders throughout the project to support a designated hospitality, tourism or events organisation. The students gain invaluable insights into how theory works in practice for consultancy and how it relates to business decision-making. In turn, they are expected to maximise the impact for the business stakeholder and transfer learning including recommendations through a presentation at the end of the project.

How it works

People collaborating

Student teams work with a range of organisations nationally and even internationally to support them to improve an aspect of performance within an organisation. Projects have included creating social media strategy and content, analysing carbon emissions, risk and crisis management, wellbeing and DEIB initiatives, service and revenue optimisation, improving customer satisfaction, AI and digital integration and business development.

The students’ skills and interests are aligned with the organisation to maximise impact including the transfer of key learning. In some cases, organisations have arranged follow-up projects or even employment opportunities for students given the positive impact.

Why get involved

  • Real-world relevance: the hospitality, tourism and events industries are evolving quickly so the consultancy projects can address specific challenges or opportunities.
  • Cost-effective resources: business partners gain access to student resources supported by academic staff for designated research agreed in a consulting brief.
  • Fresh perspectives: student teams have unique skills and can offer innovative ideas new insights to support organisational performance.
  • Knowledge transfer: the designated student supported by academic staff can deliver impact through their research to influence business decision-making for business partners.

What we need from your company

  • Your input shapes the project: We ask for your contribution in defining the initial project brief, outlining your goals, challenges, and expectations.
  • Active engagement: A designated company contact should be available to support the student throughout the project—typically through at least four one-hour meetings (online or in person).
  • Information sharing: A willingness to share relevant information needed to achieve the agreed project outcomes (with an NDA in place if required).
