From corporate tax to events management: Adam’s story

"Eighteen months ago, I made the decision to leave a five-year career in corporate tax to pursue something I had become increasingly passionate about: the events industry. It was a significant career change, but one that has already proved to be incredibly rewarding.

I chose to study the MSc International Events Management at the University of Surrey because of its outstanding reputation within the hospitality, tourism and events sector, its strong links with industry, and its emphasis on combining academic learning with real-world experience. Coming from a professional services background, I wanted a programme that would not only provide the theoretical foundations of event management, but also give me opportunities to develop practical skills and build meaningful industry connections.

Since starting the programme, I've been fortunate to experience exactly that. Hosting Surrey's Got Talent and helping to organise the student-led charity fundraiser, Sweet Moves for Challengers, allowed me to develop my confidence in live event delivery whilst working as part of fantastic teams. We've also benefited from insightful guest lectures from industry professionals, giving us first-hand perspectives on the realities of working within the events sector.

Beyond the classroom, Surrey has opened doors to opportunities that have accelerated my transition into the industry. Through the knowledge, confidence and connections I've developed during my studies, I've been able to secure roles with Festival Republic at Latitude Festival, join the Event Crew Team at Brooklands Museum, support Brighton Pride, volunteer with London Marathon Events, and continue delivering national sporting events through my long-standing involvement with Archery GB and BUCS. Following my work at Latitude, I was also offered three further roles with Festival Republic, and I'll soon be joining the team at Electric Picnic in Ireland as a Campsite Manager. Alongside my studies, I've also founded my own events company – something I wouldn't have had the confidence to pursue before beginning the programme.

Launchpad for new career

Looking back, changing careers was undoubtedly daunting. Leaving a profession I'd spent years building was a leap into the unknown, but it has been one of the best decisions I've made. My advice to anyone considering a similar move is not to let your previous career define your future. The skills you've already developed are incredibly valuable, and it's never too late to apply them in a completely different industry. If you're willing to embrace new opportunities, step outside your comfort zone and say "yes" to experiences, you'll be surprised at how quickly those experiences can shape both your confidence and your career.

For me, Surrey has been far more than a place to study. It has been the launchpad for an entirely new career, and I'm excited to see where that journey leads next."
