Five reasons to study BSc Medical Sciences (Gateway to Graduate Medicine) at Surrey
Our BSc Medical Sciences (Gateway to Graduate Medicine) has been designed for students from a widening participation background who want to study medicine. Here are five reasons to choose this course.
Our Biomedical Science course is ranked top 20 in the UK by the Daily Mail University Guide 2027 and The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2027.
1. Gateway to Medicine
At Surrey, we’re committed to widening access to the medical profession. That means opening up opportunities for students who may have faced challenges in life to help them achieve their ambition.
Our new BSc Medical Sciences (Gateway to Graduate Medicine) is an intensive two-year course that is designed to build your knowledge in biomedical science and prepare you for studying medicine. If you complete the programme with a 2:1 or higher, you’ll automatically secure a place on our four-year Medicine (Graduate Entry) BMBS programme.
Once you have achieved your medical degree, you can begin working as a foundation doctor in the UK or abroad.
2. Dedicated support
The intensive nature of this course will be matched with year-round pastoral and academic support. You’ll receive one-to-one support from our Medical School as soon as you start the course and you’ll join our friendly, welcoming biosciences community.
We’ve also included bespoke modules on clinical and professional skills to help prepare you for the transition to our Medicine programme.
3. Accredited Biomedical Science curriculum
You’ll study modules from our highly regarded Biomedical Science BSc, which has been accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) for over 20 years.
You’ll build your foundational knowledge in topics such as cell biology, biochemistry, genetics and microbiology, before investigating subjects with a greater clinical focus. You’ll also complete a research project, which is a chance to put the skills you’ve learnt into practice.
4. Multimillion-pound facilities
You’ll get hands-on experience in our £12.5 million Innovation for Health Learning Lab, fitted with the latest industry equipment. You’ll learn about biosciences methodology and conduct experiments, with screens to show teacher demonstrations and learning materials up close. You may also get to use our Project Lab as part of your research project.
And you can unwind in our Biosciences Dot, a dedicated space for biosciences students to relax or study.
5. BSc degree in two years
We know that plans change and you might decide whilst studying with us that medicine isn’t the right path for you. Our degree is intensive and does not compromise on academic content – that means you’ll achieve a full BSc in just two years, enabling earlier progression to employment.
With a medical sciences degree, you'll have lots of career paths available. These include clinical research, data science, drug safety, science communications, and pharmaceutical regulation. You’ll also gain valuable transferable skills in critical thinking, data analysis, research, communication, and teamwork.
94% of our undergraduate biosciences graduates are in work or further study within 15 months of graduating (Graduate Outcomes 2026, HESA).
