Five reasons to study medicine at Surrey
Our four-year graduate-entry Medicine BMBS degree has a clear objective: to equip you with the knowledge and experience you need to excel in the world of modern medicine. Here are five reasons to study medicine at Surrey.
1. Innovative learning
Developed in partnership with the University of Exeter, our spiral curriculum facilitates learning at different speeds and in different styles. We’ll help nurture your independence and resilience – key skills for a doctor – whilst supporting you throughout the course.
You’ll develop your skills on campus through simulated and virtual learning to build your confidence, including practising patient interactions with actors, using virtual reality headsets to learn surgical techniques, and observing surgery through live links to operating theatres. You’ll then get real, hands-on experience out on clinical placements.
You’ll be given your own iPad while you study with us, giving you 24/7 access to our online learning platform, SurreyLearn, with a wide range of digital resources at your fingertips.
2. Dedicated support
Our yearly cohort of around 100 students means you’ll get plenty of staff interaction and support. We facilitate small group teaching and team-based learning so you’ll work alongside your fellow students under our guidance. Throughout your degree, you’ll get dedicated programme and wellbeing support.
You’ll also have the opportunity to join the Surrey Medical Society, run by a friendly group of med school students who provide study support, facilitate networking opportunities, and host social events. We also have a Surrey Surgical Society.
3. Extensive clinical placements
You’ll complete structured clinical placements in our partner NHS trusts in Surrey and Sussex, which have outstanding reputations in areas from oncology to ophthalmology. All placements are within commutable distance from the University.
You’ll experience a wide range of primary and secondary care specialties, and you’ll benefit from direct and experiential learning alongside clinical team members as you work towards becoming a foundation doctor.
You’ll also benefit from the support of a dedicated clinical placements team to ensure you are getting the best experience possible.
4. State-of-the-art facilities
You’ll have access to the latest industry equipment in our multimillion-pound Clinical Simulation Centre, featuring two large wards, a critical care unit, a community flat that replicates a patient’s home, and an ambulance bay. Here, you’ll practise scenarios with actors as patients or with interactive manikins that can move, speak and react.
In our Centre for Anatomical and Surgical Education (CASE), you will learn fundamental skills in anatomy and surgery. CASE features an anatomy suite with a dissection room, cadaver storage and preparation areas, and embalming facilities. It is also equipped with multiple display screens and an overhead camera, facilitating detailed group teaching. Full human dissection at CASE will be available to you if you’ve opted for this in a special study unit.
5. Close campus community
You’ll be based on our Manor Park Campus, home to Surrey Sports Park, our £36 million health and fitness facility, and next to the Royal Surrey County Hospital where you’ll spend some time on placement. Our Stag Hill campus is within easy reach, with lots of students walking or cycling between the two.
You’ll be well connected to Guildford, including the train station, and close to the Surrey Hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty, giving you plenty of opportunities to explore and unwind in your downtime. London is 34 minutes away by train and Guildford is well connected to the South East of England, including Reading and Portsmouth.
