Inside MedSoc at Surrey
Joining a society is a fantastic way of making new friends, expanding your network and enriching your Surrey experience. We asked MedSoc president Riythaesh to share his insider info on what the society gets up to and why it’s a great idea to join.

Please tell us a bit about yourself.
Hi there! My name is Riythaesh Palany, and I am a first-year medical student at the University of Surrey with a background in biomedical science. I completed my undergraduate degree in Australia in 2023, majoring in infection and immunity, before moving to London in 2024 to pursue my goal of becoming a doctor.
What is the Surrey Medical Society all about?
The University of Surrey Medical Society is dedicated to supporting and enriching the experience of medical students, both academically and socially. As part of an accelerated programme, we understand the intense academic demands and pressures that come with medical school. That’s why our society not only provides academic resources – such as mock OSCEs, clinical skills workshops and guest lectures – but also serves as an outlet for students to unwind, connect and find support among peers.
We organise social events and networking opportunities, helping students build meaningful connections both within and outside medicine. We aim to bridge the gap between students and healthcare professionals through collaborations with external organisations and we’re committed to raising awareness of public health issues and supporting humanitarian efforts, such as those led by Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders). Ultimately, our goal is to ensure that students not only succeed in their studies but also maintain a healthy work–life balance throughout their medical journey.
Whether it’s helping someone feel more prepared for exams or simply giving students an outlet to relax and socialise, it’s incredibly rewarding to know that our work is making a difference.

What does your role as president involve? What’s the best thing about it?
As president, I oversee the society’s operations, ensuring that we provide the best experience for our members. I work closely with the committee to organise events and I liaise with faculty members and external organisations to create new opportunities for students.
The best thing about being president is seeing the impact the society has on students. Whether it’s helping someone feel more prepared for exams or simply giving students an outlet to relax and socialise, it’s incredibly rewarding to know that our work is making a difference.
What’s the most interesting or exciting event that MedSoc has been involved in recently?
One of our most exciting events was the mock OSCEs, which provided students with a chance to practise clinical skills in a structured, exam-like setting. They could refine their technique, build confidence and receive constructive feedback ahead of their assessments.
We’re also looking forward to our upcoming social event, which aims to bring together students from different healthcare disciplines. Medicine isn’t just about working in isolation – it’s about collaboration, and this event is designed to bridge the gap between future doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. It’s a great way for students to build connections, foster teamwork and unwind from the pressures of medical school in a relaxed setting.
