Inside Surrey societies: Peryton Space
Beyond making lifelong friends and expanding your network, joining a society is central to enriching your Surrey student experience. We caught up with Peryton Space for an insider look at their latest rocket builds and why joining this premier society is a game-changer for your future career.
What is Peryton Space society all about?
Peryton Space is a student-led rocketry and space society, we currently have 160+ students across 6 competitions, which range from model rocketry, to satellite design and rocket engines.
Who is the society for?
This society is for all students who have an interest in space, whether they study engineering or something completely unrelated to STEM subjects. We have teams that cover all levels of experience from total newcomers to those with lots of experience, and this allows a lot of growth within the society with great knowledge transfer.
One of the benefits our members always mention is the CV-value of participating in our competitions. Whether you’d like to get into the space industry or not, our projects will help you to learn valuable skills such as teamwork, problem-solving and planning, all of which are great to include on a CV. Many of our members who have secured placements or graduate jobs say that their interviewers asked mostly about their involvement in our competition teams. Apart from this, it’s also a great way to socialise with others on your course and adjacent courses, whilst taking part in rewarding and hands-on competitions.Matt, Former President
What cool projects or events has the society been involved in recently?
An exciting project we have been working on is the Australian Rover Challenge Competition, where we are developing a large scale rover that will compete in a range of tasks in Adelaide, Australia. This is a brilliant opportunity for our students to develop their skills in a variety of fields and compete on an international stage.
What are the group's favorite social traditions?
Our favourite social traditions are organising engineering pub quizzes and bar crawls with other university societies, as well as having movie nights in the large lecture theatres!
