Professor Newlands awarded the Colyer Gold Medal for research impact

The Royal College of Surgeons has awarded its prestigious Colyer Gold Medal to Professor Carrie Newlands for her considerable contributions to the profession and wider society through her research.

The Royal College's Faculty of Dental Surgery awarded the medal to Professor Newlands and Miss Daljit K Dhariwal from the University of Oxford, citing their most recent research that highlighted widespread sexual misconduct, including harassment, assault, and rape, within the UK surgical workforce. This study, published in the British Journal of Surgery, analysed responses from 1,434 participants, over half of whom were women. It found that 63.3% of women and 23.7% of men experienced sexual harassment from colleagues in the last five years.
