Visiting Bee Spatial Schools

Emily, Jane and Angelina have been visiting schools involved in the pilot Bee Spatial programme, speaking directly with children about their experiences of using spatial strategies to support their mathematics learning. Bee Spatial is a research project that integrates spatial thinking strategies with mathematics teaching, exploring whether these approaches can help improve the maths skills of Year 3 pupils.
Feedback from the children in this pilot trial has been positive, with pupils describing how spatial techniques have helped them approach mathematical problems. One child explained: “Visualising answering helps me because, like, you can actually imagine you are doing the thing.” Others reported that the strategies made maths problems easier by helping them organise information more effectively.
The collaboration has been positively received by both teachers and children, offering an opportunity to see how research translates into everyday classroom practice. The team is now looking forward to seeing the results of the trial and learning more about the potential impact of incorporating spatial thinking into mathematics education.
