Professor Jane Powell
As Vice-Provost for Education, Jane has overall strategic leadership of the University’s educational provision. She is a member of the University’s Senior Executive Board which oversees all aspects of university strategy and development.
Prior to her arrival at Surrey in January 2017, Jane was based at Goldsmiths, University of London, for over 20 years. With a professional background in clinical psychology, her teaching and research expertise is in addiction and brain injury, and until recently she maintained an active role in clinical practice. In particular, she established, directed, and evaluated a groundbreaking community-based neurorehabilitation service at the Homerton Hospital in north London. Having headed the Department of Psychology from 2003-2006, she moved into the senior management team and over the subsequent decade held a range of strategic leadership portfolios including – at different times – Research & Enterprise, Academic Development & Internationalisation, and the Deputy Wardenship. She orchestrated the university’s submission to REF2014 and oversaw academic progression and promotions. In parallel with these cross-cutting strategic roles, she had line management and budgetary responsibilities for a third of the university’s academic departments, encompassing arts, humanities, and social science disciplines.
