About
My research project
Understanding school absence in England: to what extent does poverty stop children going to school, and how can Government policy help?My research investigates the causes and persistence of school absenteeism in England, focusing on the role of socioeconomic circumstances, family and peer dynamics, alongside the wider school and neighbourhood environments that may shape attendance behaviour. It examines the factors underlying the rise in absenteeism since the global pandemic, including the role of income and peer influences, and evaluates the effectiveness of government initiatives aimed at improving school attendance. Using large scale administrative data on pupils and schools, this research seeks to better understand the factors driving persistent absenteeism and the effectiveness of policies implemented to address it.
