Professor Rupert Pearse

Rupert Pearse graduated in medicine from St George’s Hospital Medical School, London, and then completed postgraduate training in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine in the South-West Thames region. In 2006, Rupert was appointed Senior Lecturer in Intensive Care Medicine at Queen Mary University of London and was promoted to Professor in 2014. He founded and led the Critical Care and Perioperative Medicine Research Group at QMUL and Barts Health NHS Trust from 2010 to 2026.

Rupert’s main academic interest is in improving outcomes for patients following major surgery, and he has played lead roles in many large multicentre studies and randomised trials, both in high-income countries and the global health context. He is an emeritus NIHR Research Professor and NIHR Senior Investigator, and has made numerous contributions to health research infrastructure, including as Director of Clinical Research at Barts Health and QMUL (2017-2025) and as Chair of the NIHR Health Technology Assessment Commissioning Committee (2022-2027).

Rupert joined the University of Surrey in August 2026 as Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. His clinical duties will continue on the Adult Critical Care Unit at the Royal London Hospital where he has worked since 2005.
