My student experience
"My time at the University of Surrey, being amongst inspiring research driven academics, tutors with extensive industry experience and outstanding recording facilities, was undoubtedly invaluable."
"The Tonmeister programme provides such a deep level of understanding in so many areas, that for a given task, I am aware of all the fundamental technical, operational and artistic aspects that may affect it.
University isn’t just a place to learn about your subject, I have also learnt a lot about myself and grown personally. In my first year, I joined the Students’ Union’s Canoe club which was a great way to make friends. I was also lucky enough to play with the University Orchestra throughout my studies and help out at a local scout group, giving me valuable skills and experience that I could talk about in placement interviews.
I spent my Professional Training placement at Aquarium Studios Ltd. in Soho, London, specialising in audio post-production for film and television. Because it was a small company, I covered a variety of roles from running and reception, through to preparing sessions and actually editing dialogue for popular computer games and television programmes. The year was vital in making contacts and getting to know the industry, making me more employable now I have graduated.
We had a very close relationship with all the lecturers and it was easy to book one-to-one tutorials and ask any questions. The department made sure that every student was able to reach their full potential. It is a bi-yearly tradition of the course that the entire course and lecturers head down to a local curry house for the innocuously named ‘Tonnie Curry’. We were a well-integrated cohort where I have met friends and contacts for life - and not just in my own year! First years are encouraged to assist second and final years with their recordings - a great opportunity to learn from them and get first-hand practical recording experience.
