Unlike traditional finance programmes that focus narrowly on equity investment, this offering explores a broad range of funding sources, including grants, social impact funds, and crowdfunding. Learning outcomes

After completing the programme, participants will be able to:

Course content

This programme will cover the following sessions:

Week 1: Financial Planning & Management 

Overview: Introduction to budgeting, cash flow, and key financial concepts.

Key Outcomes:

  • Develop financial literacy and confidence in managing business finances.
  • Create a basic budget and financial plan to support business decision-making.

Week 2: Understanding Core Funding Types 

Overview: Exploration of the main types of funding: grants, debt, and equity.

Key Outcomes:

  • Understand the pros and cons of each funding type
  • Identify which options best align with your business model and growth stage.

Week 3: Alternative Finance Mechanisms

Overview: Overview of non-traditional funding options, including government support, social impact funds, crowdfunding, and emerging platforms like blockchain.

Key Outcomes:

  • Discover innovative financing routes beyond conventional methods
  • Assess the suitability of alternative funding for your venture’s goals.

Week 4: Strategic Considerations.

Overview: Linking finance to business model strategy, with a focus on risk and accessibility.

  • Learn how to align your funding strategy with your business model
  • Gain tools to evaluate funding risks and improve accessibility.

Week 5: Practical Implications.

Overview: A look at the operational aspects of financing—legal, tax, IP, and compliance.

  • Learn to protect your intellectual property and plan for tax efficiency.

Week 6: Negotiation, Selling, and Pitching Practice.

Overview: Hands-on practice in presenting your business to funders and stakeholders.

  • Refine your value proposition and communicate it effectively to funders.

Ekaterina has an extensive experience in teaching entrepreneurship and supporting both new and established ventures in their development and growth. She actively engages with industry to connect businesses with students and academics. Through student projects, research collaborations, innovation opportunities, and social enterprise initiatives, she facilitates impactful partnerships that generate tangible value. Ekaterina has developed case studies that showcase the outcomes of these collaborations, highlighting the positive impact on businesses and communities. Her research focuses on entrepreneurship within disadvantaged communities, entrepreneurial finance, and women’s entrepreneurship.

Ekaterina holds a PhD from the University of Strathclyde, where her research explored the informal investment market in the UK. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA), an academic advisor for Enactus Surrey, and a founding member of the Surrey Women’s Entrepreneurship Network. In this capacity, she supports women entrepreneurs in enhancing their finance readiness through mentorship, event organisation, mastermind sessions, and creating matching opportunities.

Kat Mack is the Head of Engagement at Surrey Research Park and a passionate advocate for startup growth and inclusive entrepreneurship. Her previous roles leading the student enterprise within Surrey and as Chair of the SETsquared Student Enterprise working group made her pivotal in supporting early-stage ventures, helping founders turn innovative ideas into sustainable businesses through practical guidance and strategic programme development that shaped the service for all entrepreneurial students.

Kat co-founded the Surrey Women’s Entrepreneurship Network – a dynamic community designed to champion, support, and connect women founders from all backgrounds. Through this network, she provides mentorship, visibility, and opportunities for female entrepreneurs to thrive, championing diversity in entrepreneurship. Her commitment to building a more inclusive and vibrant startup ecosystem aims to better the entrepreneurial landscape across the region.
