Alumni inspire law students with careers advice

Law students received tips and advice from a range of alumni from the legal and business sectors at the second annual Law Speed Networking Evening.

Organised by the Alumni Relations Office in conjunction with the School of Law and Student Law Society, 20 graduates returned to campus and shared their post-Surrey experiences with 40 undergraduates keen to learn about the career options open to them.

The evening, hosted by Claire Lillywhite, the professional training and employability lead at the School of Law, comprised an hour’s speed networking where students visited a number of ‘stations’ against the clock to gain top tips from alumni, who included solicitors from various specialisms and at various stages of their careers, barristers, and a senior clerk and pupil.  This was followed by a cheese and wine reception for more informal networking and the chance for in-depth conversations.

Lucy Barnes, Officer of the Student Law Society, said: “This is the second time the society has held a speed networking event and we are delighted with how successful it was. We recognise our alumni are the very best people to share knowledge of where a Surrey degree has taken them and inspire students to succeed. We highly value this support.”

Lucy Evans, Alumni Relations Officer for the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, added: “It was wonderful to welcome back a really diverse group of alumni covering a broad spectrum of career options. Their insights are extremely beneficial to students to help them with the choices they are making about their futures.”

The event complements the existing range of professional and careers support offered by the School of Law and Careers Service, including the annual Law Fair which takes place in November, as well as regular visiting speakers, and a busy programme of activities run in combination with the Student Law Society, such as mooting and client interviewing.
