Professor GQ Max Lu AO who has been an Australian national since 1991, received the honour in recognition of his distinguished service to education and international research in the field of materials chemistry and nanotechnology, to engineering, and to Australia-China relations.
Chair of Council at the University of Surrey, Dr Jim Glover, congratulated Professor Lu on behalf of the University of Surrey community:

He is a humble and inspirational leader and genuinely talented academic. It is wonderful that he has rightly been acknowledged at the highest level for his contribution to education and international research in the fields of materials chemistry and nanotechnology, to engineering and to Australia-China relations.
