Funding information

We are offering the UKRI standard stipend (currently £18,622 per year) with an additional bursary of £1,700 per year for full 3.5 years for exceptional candidates. In addition, a research, training and support grant of £3,000 over the project is also offered. Full home or overseas tuition fees (as applicable) will be covered.

About

​Radiation therapy is used for more than half of all cancer patients.  New frontiers in radiation therapy are reached by integrating together imaging and radiation-therapy systems, for imaging the patient immediately prior or during treatment. During-treatment (intrafraction) 3D tomographic imaging represents the most powerful tool for precise and personalised therapy, and ultimately for better disease control.    

​This project aims to advance the intrafraction image-guided radiation therapy through the development, computational implementation, and validation of novel statistical and learned iterative image reconstruction algorithms for tomographic imaging with the treatment radiation beam.   

​The student will benefit from the scientific environment and resources provided by the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing CVSSP and the Surrey Institute for People-Centred AI, and from multidisciplinary collaboration with the Royal Marsden Hospital and industry centres.

You will need to meet the minimum entry requirements for our PhD programme.

Applicants should have:  

  • ​A first-class (or equivalent overseas qualification) in an appropriate discipline (e.g., engineering, computer science, physics or applied mathematics) or MSc with Distinction (or above 70% average)  
  • ​You should be able to demonstrate excellent mathematical, analytic, programming skills.  
  • ​Previous experience in image reconstruction, machine/deep learning, would be advantageous. No prior experience in medical imaging is required.
