AI sign-language translation research shortlisted for THE Awards 2026
Professor Richard Bowden and Signapse.ai have been shortlisted in the category Knowledge Exchange / Transfer Initiative of the Year in the THE Awards 2026 for Deaf-centred AI innovation.
The achievement recognises the University’s work to ensure our artificial intelligence (AI) research is delivering real-world impact. By powering instant Sign Language translation, we’re directly addressing the digital exclusion of around 70 million Deaf sign-language users.
Existing approaches to AI translation have focused on graphical avatars that miss much of the subtleties of human motion - but Signapse, a University spinout, automatically translates online and offline text into real-time, photo-realistic sign language videos. The technology is already deployed to translate time-critical travel announcements in UK railway stations and international airports.
Reflecting on the shortlisting, Professor Bowden, Professor of Computer Vision and Machine Learning, said: “I am delighted to be shortlisted for this year’s THE Awards.
“Up until now, the lack of digital accessibility and Sign Language translators has made it difficult for Deaf people to navigate everyday information and activities. Our goal is not to replace human interpreters or translators, but to provide accessibility where it is currently not available. By working with Signapse and an incredible team of Deaf and hearing staff, we’re making the world more accessible.”
Professor Lisa Collins, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research and Innovation, added: “Research with purpose is at the heart of what we are trying to achieve at Surrey. Signapse is a great example of that ambition, with research in AI-powered sign-language translation being developed into something that is making a real difference for Deaf sign-language users. We are delighted to see the team recognised in this way, and wish them every success in the final.”
This year’s awards ceremony will take place on Thursday 26 November at The Vox in Birmingham.
