Andrew King elected Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences

Research that has reshaped housing policy and practice for LGBTQ+ people, reaching over 100 social housing providers across the UK and contributing to the development of LGBTQ+ inclusive housing for older people, has earned Professor Andrew King election as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.

Professor King is Associate Dean (Doctoral College) in the Faculty of Arts, Business and Social Sciences and Professor of Sociology at the University of Surrey. Professor King was nominated by the British Society of Gerontology, a learned society in the United Kingdom dedicated to enhancing knowledge about ageing and later life.

The Academy’s Fellowship comprises approximately 1,700 leading social scientists from academia, and the public, private and third sectors. Fellows are elected through a peer review process for the excellence and impact of their work.

For nearly two decades, Professor King has researched the lives of LGBTQ+ people, with a particular focus on housing, ageing and inclusive service provision. He has a long-standing track record of turning research into policy and practice through co-designed and community-engaging impact projects.

It is a real honour to be elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. I am passionate about conducting research that makes a tangible difference in people’s lives and I truly believe that decent, safe housing should be a right, not a privilege.

I’m proud that our work at Surrey, by amplifying LGBTQ+ voices, has been able to shape policy and practice at a national scale and that my work around LGBTQ+ ageing is recognised and influential, both in the UK and internationally. I look forward to working with the Academy to demonstrate how rigorous social science can help build a society that works for everyone. Professor King also led the international CILIA-LGBTQI+ study across England, Scotland, Portugal and Germany, and has collaborated with LGBTQ+ housing and advocacy organisations, including Tonic Housing, HouseProud and Stonewall Housing.

Professor King is Deputy Editor of 'Ageing & Society’ and Co-Editor of ‘Sociology’. His authored and edited books include Older Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Adults: Identities, Intersections and Institutions; Intersections of Ageing, Gender and Sexualities; and Older LGBT People – Minding the Knowledge Gaps. He is the Co-Director of Surrey’s Centre of Excellence on Ageing and an executive committee member of the British Society of Gerontology.

Andrew's election as a Fellow reflects two decades of research that has genuinely changed lives. He's shown what happens when rigorous scholarship stays rooted in the communities it's meant to serve.
