Commentary: Landmark US Supreme Court ruling on birthright citizenship
The following expert comment below was written by Alex Sarch, Professor of Law at the University of Surrey, after the landmark ruling from the US Supreme Court on birthright citizenship.

"The impact of the Trump v. CASA ruling will be widely felt, perhaps most importantly in a vast number of future cases. Federal District Court judges in the US until today had been able to issue preliminary injunctions before the final adjudication of a case to block policies in certain circumstances where a policy likely to be found illegal would cause irreparable harm without the injunction. Nationwide injunctions used to be able to protect the rights of everyone affected by a policy that is likely to be found illegal on the merits — but no longer. Justice Kavanaugh attempted to soften the blow by pointing out that preliminary class-wide relief following an adjudication can still be granted on a regional or national basis, but this is not fully convincing. As Justice Jackson points out, it means anyone's rights can be threatened if they haven't sued yet. We will see the effects of today's decision for years to come."
