Education has the power to change lives, says Surrey’s new Pro-Vice-Chancellor Education
Professor Nicola Walshe, an education leader who has spent her career building inclusive, high-performing learning environments and embedding sustainability into curricula has been appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) at the University of Surrey.
Professor Walshe joins from University College London’s (UCL) Institute of Education (IOE), one of the world’s foremost centres for education research and practice.
Professor Walshe brings extensive senior leadership experience across higher education. At the IOE, she served as Pro-Director for Education, leading significant improvements to student experience and outcomes across taught programmes – from undergraduate through to postgraduate level. She also holds two further leadership positions at UCL – Executive Director of the UCL Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Education, and Education Strategy Lead for UCL’s Climate Crisis Grand Challenge. In the latter role, she has led institution-wide changes to how climate and sustainability are embedded across curricula, teaching and assessment.
Professor Walshe begins her role in September.
In her new role, Professor Walshe will lead the University’s education strategy and the continued development of Surrey’s academic portfolio. Her appointment directly supports the University’s Vision 2041 strategy, which sets out ambitions for an increasingly personalised student experience, a responsive and flexible curriculum, and expanded access to high-quality education both on campus and online.
I am delighted to be joining Surrey and becoming part of a university with such a strong reputation for innovation, student success and real-world impact. Throughout my career, I have been driven by a belief that education has the power to change lives and shape a better future. I am passionate about creating inclusive and transformative learning experiences that enable all students to flourish, while equipping them with the knowledge, skills and confidence to address the complex challenges facing society. I look forward to working in partnership with colleagues and students to build on Surrey's many strengths and further strengthen its position as a leader in future-focused, globally connected education.Professor Walshe
