Free ‘Summer of Cinema’ at University of Surrey campus – and you choose the movie!!

Movie buffs and music lovers are invited to the University of Surrey Students’ Union Summer of Cinema, every Saturday from 16 June to 7 July.

Outdoor cinema taking place on a sunny evening at University of Surrey

Hosted by the University of Surrey Students’ Union, Summer of Cinema is an outdoor, late night movie screening, every Saturday from 16 June to 7 July. Set by the picturesque lake on the University’s Stag Hill campus, film fanatics will be able to vote for which cult classic will be shown, each week focusing on a different decade from the 1980s to now.

The events start at 7pm, with themed music from the chosen decade provided by student run Stag Radio. Movie screenings start after dark, at 10pm.

Helena Mason, Vice President Community at the University of Surrey Students’ Union, said: “Summer of Cinema adds to the amazing work Surrey Union students have been doing to host events on campus for everyone in Guildford and Surrey to come and enjoy. We are so lucky to have such a beautiful campus with a lake and we are always keen to extend a warm welcome to the community. So come down, grab a spot on the grass, have a little sing along and enjoy our Summer of Cinema.”

Food and drink will be available from a range of stalls, and cinema goers are encouraged to bring their blankets, bean bags and deckchairs to enjoy an evening of picnicking, retro tunes and the stars of the big screen. The event is free and open to all, with free parking available in the campus car parks.

Nikki Dormon, Public Engagement Manager at the University of Surrey, said: “Summer of Cinema is such a great initiative, and what better way to share our beautiful campus with the local community than through this free event. We hope that lots of local guests will support this Students’ Union event, and join us to enjoy some cult classics over a picnic with friends or family.”

Summer of Cinema follows the success of the Students’ Union Free Fest, and is the latest in a series of events which hopes to open up the University of Surrey campus to students, staff and the local community.
