National launch of new resources to support healthcare students
New resources to support healthcare students to prepare for practice placements will be launched nationally at a conference hosted by the University of Surrey and NHS England in July 2025.

These resources were created by the Preparation for Practice Placements Project to help further and higher education staff, along with practice educators, to support students on pre-registration healthcare courses as they prepare for placements. A pilot study showed that students who used the resources felt less anxious before starting their placements.
The resources include an animation, ten short films and a facilitator handbook; the package was initially rolled out in the South East in March 2025, prior to the national launch. The content has been mapped to the NHS England Safe Learning Environment Charter priorities, and covers key topics such as preparing for placement, maintaining wellbeing, giving and receiving feedback, managing the emotional impact of clinical practice and handling other challenges.
For nursing, midwifery and allied health professional learners, we hope that these resources build their understanding and confidence necessary to thrive in practice and to deliver safe, effective care. And for educators, our toolkit serves to enhance their efforts that support readiness for practice-based learning.Katie Webb, lead on the project

The project is a collaboration between the University of Surrey, NHS England South East and the Buckinghamshire Health and Social Care Academy, involving contributions from learners, educators, and service users across South East England.
