Surrey recognised as a top 50 university for internationalisation

  • Times Higher Education places the University of Surrey 43rd in its top 200 list of the most international universities in the world

  • Top ranking reflects Surrey’s world-leading research and diversity, with students from 120 countries and over 50 per cent of research featuring an international co-author

The University of Surrey has been recognised for its outstanding international focus, achieving 43rd  place in the Times Higher Education’s top 200 list of the most international universities in the world.

Surrey has maintained a top 50 position reflecting the diversity of the University’s student body, the quality of its international academic collaborations and outputs, and its global outlook.

Having recently been named “University of the Year” by The Times and Sunday Times, the University of Surrey is already recognised as one of the UK’s leading universities with a world-class research profile and a reputation for excellence in teaching. This ranking reinforces the international profile of the University.

“It has been a pivotal year for the University of Surrey. This latest recognition demonstrates how our research and teaching has an impact both in the UK and overseas. Our collaboration with academic and industrial partners from around the world delivers dividends for our students as well as providing considerable benefits for the UK economy and our local region too,” said Professor Michael Kearney, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Surrey.

Last year our international standing was strengthened by the launch of the world-leading 5G Innovation Centre in partnership with global technology leaders, and the opening of our School of Veterinary Medicine by HM The Queen. Later this year, we will welcome a new Vice-Chancellor, Professor Max Lu, who joins us from the University of Queensland in Australia. His strong international outlook will help Surrey in its mission to build a formidable reputation across the world.”

Commenting on the University of Surrey’s achievement, the Times Higher Education noted, “An institution’s global outlook is one of the key markers of a prestigious university. The top institutions hire faculty from all over the world, attract students from a global market of top talent and collaborate with leading departments wherever they happen to be based.

It is great news for all the institutions in the list of the most international universities in the world. It is a sign of great potential, competitiveness and dynamism.”

With students from over 120 different countries and with over 50 per cent of research outputs featuring an international co-author, Surrey is one of the most culturally-diverse universities in the UK.

As a founding member of the University Global Partnership Network (UGPN) combined with many Bilateral Accords, academics and students benefit from collaboration and partnership with 126 international universities and organisations.
