University of Surrey recognised with prestigious national sporting award

In December, the University of Surrey was recognised with the Physical Activity Excellence Award 2022-2024, bestowed by British University and College Sport (BUCS). The award celebrates Surrey’s excellent physical activity provision.

BUCS is the national governing body for higher education sport in the UK. Its Physical Activity Excellence Award is bestowed only on the small number of institutions that demonstrate increasing physical activity engagement among their populations.

The University of Surrey is delighted to have been recognised with this sought-after award.

There is a lot of great work going on in the sector and we are thrilled to be recognised for the award. Our disABILITY sport week initiative was brilliant in increasing the provision and access for disabled students across campus. Tom Edwards, Sport Development and Performance Manager

The award adds to an impressive roster of sporting achievements at the University’s £36m Sports Park, including pitch accreditation from FIFA and World Rugby; being chosen as the training home of the famed Harlequin Rugby Club; and welcoming high-profile national and international events, notably the Women’s Rugby World Cup.

The Sports Park was memorably lauded by the Harlequins who said, “The facilities at Surrey Sports Park are undoubtedly the best of any Premiership club”.

Surrey Sports Park offers vast and varied facilities that bring students, locals and elite professionals together. It opened in April 2010 and its outstanding facilities and close links with major sporting organisations helped shape Surrey’s pioneering BSc Sport and Exercise Sciences degree, launched in September 2014.
