University of Surrey unites with local community for sixth Orchestra Day
The University of Surrey Orchestra will be welcoming talented local musicians to their sixth Orchestra Day, which will take place on Sunday 2 February from 11am – 6pm at PATS Studio 1 on Surrey’s Stag Hill campus.
Players will rehearse and perform an impressive rendition of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.6 ‘Pathetique’. Composed in 1893, this was Tchaikovsky’s final completed symphony and arguably one of his most popular works as well as one of the defining sounds of the romantic period. Previous events have included works by Rachmaninov, Bernstein, Prokofiev and Danny Elfman.
The latest Orchestra Day, organised by the Department of Music and Media, will provide local musicians with a unique opportunity to play alongside Surrey’s music students and staff and to hone their musical skills under the inspirational guidance of the Orchestra’s eminent conductor, Russell Keable. Russell is celebrated for his world-class performances with the London Mozart Players, BBC Concert Orchestra, Royal Oman Symphony Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Russell said: “Our Orchestra Days have become a ‘must attend’ event for many Surrey musicians. It’s a chance to rediscover their love of playing with an orchestra after a break, or for our younger players to experience the joy and camaraderie of performing with an orchestra for the first time. We are continually welcoming new talent and it’s a fantastic way of drawing the local community to campus, sharing our facilities and giving something back to Guildford. Whether you’re a player or member of the audience, it’s a thoroughly enjoyable day for all.”
The Orchestra Day public performance will take place at 5.30pm, also in PATS Studio 1, welcoming music lovers as well as friends and family of players to come and enjoy this admission-free concert.
It is recommended that any musicians wishing to participate have ABRSM Grade 7 or equivalent for this piece. Anyone who would like to play in the Orchestra should email firstname.lastname@example.org by Thursday 23 January 2020 confirming their instrument and grading to book their place. A light lunch will be provided, as well as refreshments throughout the day.
