Why Surrey is the University of the Year

Find out what our students like about studying here and why they think Surrey was named 'University of the Year' and 'University of the Year for Student Experience' by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016.

Postgraduate students Katerina Perdikaki and Prabal Gupta reveal what it’s like to be a student at The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016 University of the Year.

Katerina Perdikaki

Katerina, an MA Audiovisual Translation graduate, is currently completing a PhD in Translation Studies.

"The University of Surrey has made remarkable progress in the last few years, and has kept going up places in the league tables. I was unfamiliar with the ranking system of UK universities before I came to study here, but I soon realised that league tables are quite important in British Higher Education.

"The fact that Surrey was named the University of the Year did not change my opinion of it - it has always been an inspiring place to study and it has not let me down so far.

"Surrey deserves the title because of the quality of research and teaching it provides. Personally, what I like about studying here is that I am always exploring new facets of my strengths and capabilities.

"Surrey has given me the opportunity to develop in more ways than I could have imagined, and the people I have met here have played a crucial part in the process."

Prabal Gupta

Prabal Gupta is studying Msc Electronic Engineering.

“The University has been doing well in terms of research and ranking highly in the league tables, but being categorised as the University of the Year has given me more respect for this institution, its lecturers and all of its hard working researchers.

"Surrey has one of the very best Electronics Engineering departments and is home to the 5G Innovation Centre, so it really deserves the accolade.

"Getting higher in the league tables and receiving the University of the Year award definitely helps to raise the profile of Surrey among employers. I believe prospective employers have been impressed and this makes them want to take on Surrey's students.

"The best thing about studying at Surrey is the people; they are friendly, the lecturers are always more than happy to help regarding course work, and the placement scheme is the most helpful in terms of securing a graduate job. I have met the best people from around the world, and coming here has matured me, making me the person I am now. I am truly grateful for being accepted at Surrey and having the opportunity to study here.”
