My research project
Improving social-media text comprehension and simplification through AII am a Leverhulme Trust Doctoral Scholar. My PhD research focuses on the text simplification of social media and other user-generated content, with particular attention to preserving the original meaning during the simplification process. Social-media language is especially challenging because meaning is communicated not only through factual information but also through emotion, sarcasm, slang, informal and non-literal expressions, emojis, hashtags, emphasis, and other platform-specific cues. My research investigates how these features are affected when complex or informal posts are rewritten in more accessible language, and how simplification systems can avoid weakening, altering, or introducing meaning. A key part of the project is the development and evaluation of a meaning-preservation framework that examines whether factual content, emotional meaning and intensity, non-literal language, social-media cues, and other important information remain consistent with the original post. Overall, the aim of my research is to improve accessible text simplification by ensuring that simplified social-media content is easier to understand while still accurately representing the meaning and communicative intent of the original author.
