Professor SanYuMay Tun

Professor SanYuMay Tun is Honorary Professor in the School of Medicine, University of Surrey. She is the founding chair of the Medical Schools Council’s Education for Sustainable Healthcare Alliance (MSC – ESHA) comprising the 50 or so UK medical schools. Professor Tun is recognised nationally and internationally as leading in the field of Education for Sustainable Healthcare (ESH) and Planetary Health in health professions education. She has a background in medicine as a former general practitioner, in environmental science and policy, and in medical education as a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (PFHEA). 

Professor Tun led the development of the first ESH curriculum to be endorsed by any national medical educational bodies – Education for Sustainable Healthcare – A curriculum for the UK. The GMC, the medical regulator, includes this guidance as supporting material for its required Outcomes for graduates to qualify as a doctor in the UK. This framework has also informed Planetary Health and ESH curricula in other health professions, postgraduate training, and in countries around the world. 

Professor Tun is on the boards and steering committees of the major global institutions in this space including the PHA, PHRC and GCCHE, and also advises on policy and regulation. SanYuMay is invited to develop faculty, examine, and lecture across the UK including at Glasgow, Imperial College and LSHTM, as well as internationally. She is a Fellow of Green Templeton College, University of Oxford.
