"Neurodiversity and Incarceration: Exploring the Impact on Young Male Adults Aged 18–30 in the UK Prison SystemThis research explores the lived experiences of neurodiverse young male adults (aged 18-30) within the UK prison system, examining how conditions such as Autism, ADHD, and Dyslexia influence their interactions with criminal justice processes and prison life. It investigates the extent to which the current custodial environment, policies, and rehabilitative practices accommodate or marginalise neurodiverse individuals.
Through qualitative and quantitative enquiry, the study aims to uncover how neurodiversity affects relationships, behaviour, communication, and coping mechanisms in custody, as well as well-being and mental health, and to identify gaps in understanding support and inclusion. Ultimately, it seeks to inform more equitable neuro-informed approaches to imprisonment and rehabilitation in the UK.
