Centre for Environment and Sustainability

Postgraduate study

Surrey’s Centre for Environment and Sustainability (CES) is a vibrant, interdisciplinary research community. Our three postgraduate courses – Corporate Environmental Management, Environmental Strategy and Sustainable Development – challenge students to think systematically and creatively, and act pragmatically. Offered on a full-time or part-time basis, the programmes are taught over intensive five-day sessions. Teaching is complemented by high-profile guest speakers from industry, government and non-governmental organisations.

What our students say

  • Fantastic work experience in industry

    Philippa Hastings

    Sustainable Development MSc

“I was drawn to the Sustainable Development MSc at Surrey due to the wide variety of modules on offer. The opportunity to explore topics spanning several aspects of the subject area using an interdisciplinary approach was appealing.

The option to carry out a Professional Training placement also stood out. Gaining beneficial work experience within industry, and seeing how I might apply the knowledge and skills learned alongside my studies was a fantastic opportunity.

Sustainable development is a multi-faceted area. Having the opportunity to explore a variety of concepts was a great way to pinpoint my own areas of interest. For example: the environmental impacts of the fast fashion industry.”

  • Provides ‘plug-in-and-play’ skills

    Zeyang Xiang

    Environmental Strategy MSc

“I wanted a course that would allow me to gain a broad understanding of the entire environmental industry. I chose Surrey because CES is one of the best and longest-established environmental study centres in the UK.

As well as giving essential background knowledge, the MSc provides in-depth discussion on topical issues. It’s vital for students to have this sort of up-to-date information because the environmental industry is growing and changing at an unprecedented rate.

One of the best aspects of the programme is that it equips students with ‘plug-and-play’ skills and knowledge, allowing them to enter a career in their chosen field as soon as they graduate.”

  • Approachable and helpful staff

    Nana Fischer

    Sustainable Development MSc

“Sustainable Development is a wonderful programme. The module sections are so diverse that there’s definitely something to suit everyone. I also love the guest lecturers as they give an insight into how sustainability is implemented in companies.

I found the staff at CES to be very approachable and helpful. Guildford’s a safe and peaceful place, and I enjoyed using the facilities at Surrey Sports Park.

I had a great time at University! I have a clearer career path now. I’ll most likely do a PhD programme in Environmental Policy and International Relations."
