Commuting is increasingly popular. Surrey reports that around 20% of its UK students commute, while 31% of UK university applicants in 2025 indicated they planned to live at home during their studies. 

Students can travel to Surrey by train, bus, bicycle, car, or lift share. The university also offers discounted bus passes, parking permits, cycle facilities, and access to an e-bike rental scheme.

Yes. Commuter students have access to a range of study spaces, including the Library and Learning Centre, MySurrey Hive and Dot rooms. Some study areas are open 24/7 and free Wi-Fi is available across campus.

Yes. Surrey provides free daytime storage lockers across the Stag Hill campus, making it easier for commuter students to avoid carrying bags, books, or equipment throughout the day.

No. Commuter students are encouraged to join clubs, societies, sports teams, events and networks. Surrey offers more than 170 clubs and societies, as well as dedicated opportunities such as the Student Commuter Network.

The Centre for Wellbeing provides a range of mental health and wellbeing services to help students manage university life and maintain a healthy balance between study and personal commitments.

Yes. Surrey offers guest bedrooms on both campuses throughout the year. Commuter students can book short stays of up to 28 days if they need overnight accommodation near campus.
