"We have lots of fun simulating different fitness tests such as VO2 max, lactate threshold and Wingate, which make our degree a memorable experience."

What do you like about your course and why?

The thing I love about my course is having the chance to apply what was learnt in lectures in our practicals. For example, one week we might learn about training zones and how they influence training programmes. Then the next week, we would simulate a lactate threshold test in the lab to get a better grasp on how athletes lactate thresholds differ, and how that will impact their fitness programme. This is a great way to solidify learning and it's lots of fun.

What do you enjoy most about Surrey?

The thing I enjoy most about Surrey is the fitness community. There are so many opportunities to stay active and have fun. The sports park hosts many sports you don't often get to play such as squash, padel and bouldering. Or, if you prefer something more competitive, Team Surrey compete in a great variety of sports ranging from rowing to powerlifting to long-distance running. There is something for everyone.

"Everyone in the cohort is ultimately working towards the same goal of wanting to improve the health and fitness industry. This creates a supportive community where we want each other to succeed."

What do you want to do when you graduate?

After I graduate, I intend to apply the skills and qualifications I've gained from my degree in the sports industry. My dream is to work alongside coaches and health professionals to help athletes develop into the best versions of themselves, so they can achieve their goals. To help kickstart my career, I recently started assisting coaching the University's development rowing team. This is a great way for me to experience what working with different kinds of athletes is like, and how they have different coaching requirements to help them prosper. I look forward to carrying this on with other sports and athletes post-graduation.

What advice would you give to students thinking of studying your course?

Sport and exercise science differs from other courses because there is a genuine level of care and intent. Everyone in the cohort is ultimately working towards the same goal of wanting to improve the health and fitness industry. This creates a supportive community where we want each other to succeed. In addition to this, we have lots of fun simulating different fitness tests such as VO2 max, lactate threshold and Wingate, which make our degree a memorable experience.
