Leadership in Healthcare MScWhy did you choose to study your course at Surrey?
In my workplace, we have University of Surrey students who always enjoy their courses so I felt it would be good to study there too. When I enquired about doing my masters, the course lead organised a Teams call with me and outlined what the three-and-a-half years would look like. This made me realise that Surrey was where I wanted to study next.
What are the best things about Surrey and your course?
I really enjoy that our class groups are small, the tutors know us individually which helps us to be open and honest about our progress and how we are enjoying the course. Our personal tutor or course lead is always on hand to support when needed. I have found the academic side of the course very challenging but my lecturers have always been so motivating and supportive and always encouraged me to continue with my studies even when I felt it was impossible.
How has the course influenced your career plans?
I’ve been able to use my knowledge and learning from this course in my role as Matron for Children and Young People at East Surrey Hospital, managing the paediatric inpatient ward and the children’s specialist nursing team.
This course is a very good opportunity to network with people from other NHS trusts. We have met some amazing guest speakers, which has given me great insight into potential career progression. A standout talk for me was delivered by two speakers from the Foundation of Nursing Studies – it made me realise that my career pathway doesn’t have to be as linear as I expected and there are lots of opportunities out there.
What advice do you have for students thinking of doing this course?
I would highly recommend doing this course, I really enjoyed the teaching sessions and meeting other students and guest speakers. If you feel worried about the academic side, you just need to believe in yourself – it’s definitely possible with the support of the team at Surrey.
