Music BMus (Hons)Entry year
2023What do you like about your course and why?
I have loved my time at Surrey so far. The course is extremely engaging and has challenged me to explore a wide range of topics beyond my comfort zone in music. One thing that I really value about the course is the close working relationship that we develop with our academic staff in the department. This is incredibly helpful when it comes to preparation for assessment or queries with lectures, and it makes Surrey a very welcoming and comfortable place to learn.
I also love the blend between academic studies and practical work. Studying at Surrey has allowed me to spend a lot of time improving on my first study instrument (the piano), whilst also challenging me to think critically and academically.
What do you enjoy most about Surrey?
For me, the best thing about studying at Surrey is the range of activities you can take part in as a student. The course is really enjoyable, but alongside that there are a diverse range of student-led clubs and societies, with so much going on to be a part of. I am part of three different societies, only one of which is music related!
The Students' Union is brilliant for allowing students to engage in their hobbies and interests outside of their subject of study. Also, I love living in Guildford! There's lot's going on, and the close proximity to central London is a real plus.
What do you want to do when you graduate?
I would like to stay around the Guildford/London area and pursue a job in live audio engineering. I have been very fortunate to have been able to gain valuable work experience in the field, and feel that the next step is to pursue work opportunities in the London area.
Guildford lends itself as a perfect place to commute from, with the excellent train link into Waterloo. My studies at Surrey have certainly prepared me well for the world of work, and I'm looking forward to taking this next step in my career.
Your advice to new students
Studying Music at Surrey is really rewarding, and I would say that if you're thinking of doing the same, come with an open mind. The programme at Surrey, whilst being flexible for you to tailor to your own interests, also challenges you to explore new concepts and ideas, as well as deepen and extend your knowledge in your topics of interest. I would recommend coming to visit to get a feel of the campus and the department. Also, have a browse of the course structure on the website, and see which modules might take your fancy!
