Why did you choose to continue your postgraduate studies at Surrey, instead of another university?

I chose to stay at Surrey because it was familiar. From the scenic campus and the attentive lecturers, it was an easy decision to come back for postgraduate study.

How did the University support you in your transition to becoming a postgraduate student?

I have to give props to my personal tutor who frequently checked in on all the students on my course. Having someone who can answer all your questions makes the transition less confusing and disorientating, especially when attempting to balance multiple responsibilities as a mature student.

What have been the biggest benefits so far of continuing your studies at Surrey?

One of the biggest benefits I've experienced is the mental stimulation from the demanding content. I enjoy the discussions that are held between peers during lectures and workshops. Having completed my first year, I'm excited to return for my second year to learn more and have more thought-provoking debates.

Another benefit is that I was able to study this course part-time. I work as a part-time healthcare assistant for my local hospital and it's important to me that I maintain the connections that I have there whilst developing my career in clinical psychology. I enjoy the balance between clinical/hands-on work and the ability to take time away to focus on my learning and my future. I'd highly recommend taking the course part-time for those who have work commitments, childcare or any other extracurricular activities as these are manageable with the flexibility offered at Surrey.

What advice would you give to a current Surrey undergraduate student who is thinking of staying for a masters?

It's important to consider whether the masters is necessary for your career development. I had taken some time away from academia after my undergraduate studies here at Surrey to gain some life experience so I could decide what I really wanted to do. There are various pathways that can lead you to your goal and it’s ok not to do a masters straight away. Speaking to an Employability and Careers officer at Surrey can also help you decide on your next steps.

What do you plan to do after graduating and how has your masters degree supported that?

I hope to become a clinical psychologist after graduating from the Psychology (Conversion) MSc. Coming from a biochemistry background, I need to obtain Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership with the British Psychological Society to pursue my specialty training. This masters provides a streamlined pathway to that goal.
