Abstract
The shapes and figures familiar from calculus and classical geometry consist of smooth curves and surfaces which we recognise as being one-dimensional, two-dimensional, three-dimensional and so forth based on their local shape: when we zoom in on a small part of the shape, does it resemble a line segment, or a flat plane, or a volume? In this talk I will discuss fractals, which are mathematical objects which have detailed structures at arbitrarily small scales. I will also discuss some of the ways in which we can attempt to describe the "dimension" of a fractal object.
