About
The Vietnam Merit Scholarship recognises exceptional postgraduate applicants from Vietnam who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and strong ambitions. It is designed to support postgraduate students whose initiative and drive will propel them towards excellence in their academic journey and future careers.
Five awards are available, each offering a £10,000 tuition fee waiver for a full-time postgraduate programme commencing in September 2026.
Eligibility criteria
In order to be eligible, applicants must:
- Be classified as an overseas fee-paying student
- Hold an offer to study a full-time postgraduate programme* commencing in September 2026
- Be self-funded (you must be paying for your studies independently rather than being sponsored or in receipt of another scholarship)
- Be a Vietnamese passport holder residing (living) in Vietnam
- Have achieved or expected to achieve the equivalent of a UK Upper Second-Class Honours (2:1) degree (GPA 7.0/10.0)
- Not be a student from the Surrey International Study Centre (SISC)
- *Excludes part-time and distance-learning programmes, MSc Applied Analytical Chemistry, MSc Pharmaceutical Sciences, MSc Biotechnology, MSc Human Nutrition, MSc Food Science, and the MBA course.
- The award is not deferrable (if applicants are deferring, they will need to reapply for the award. This will also be subject to the award availability).
- Applicants in receipt of the Vietnam Merit Scholarship are not eligible for any other University of Surrey scholarship. This scholarship cannot be combined with the alumni or early payment discounts.
- For two-year postgraduate courses, the scholarship award is valid for the first year only.
Additional expectations
If you are awarded a scholarship, you will be expected to:
- Act as an ambassador of the University of Surrey and of the scholarship scheme during your studies.
- Attend and participate in marketing or recruitment activities to share your experience as a Surrey student and scholar.

Submit your application by completing the application form, detailing how you meet the eligibility criteria and how this scholarship will support fulfilling your academic aspirations.
All scholarship applications will be reviewed after the deadline of 20 July 2026. We reserve the right to close applications before this date, so please apply as soon as possible. Successful applicants will be informed by 31 July 2026.
There are a limited number of Vietnam Merit Scholarships available, and only successful candidates will be notified.
