Department of Sociology Doctoral studentships 2023
Two funded studentships for outstanding postgraduate researchers in the Department of Sociology.

Duration3 years (or pro-rata part-time)
Studentships will cover, for three years or pro-rata part-time: full fees (at home or international rate), an annual stipend (c.£16,000), and a training grant of £500 per year.
The Department of Sociology is pleased to announce two Doctoral studentships for postgraduate research starting in October 2023. Two awards will be made to outstanding postgraduate researchers whose work aligns with research themes of the Department of Sociology. Find out more about our research themes. Whilst we will consider proposals in any of these areas, this year we are prioritising projects in the fields of work, religion, sustainability, gender, and popular culture.
Awards can be made to UK or international candidates.
Applications will be assessed on:
- Personal statement
- Educational and professional achievements
- Feasibility and quality of the research proposal
- Fit to the Department of Sociology themes
- Fit to the proposed supervisory team.
You will need to meet the minimum entry requirements for our PhD programme. Candidates will need to apply to the University of Surrey.
Offers will be subject to satisfactory references.
This studentship is open to any UK or international candidates.
