About

We invite applications for the dual PhD programme jointly offered by the SHTM Surrey and the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). 

This is a Joint PhD Programme leading to dual awards from two global leading institutions in hospitality and tourism. Successful applicants will be jointly admitted to the programme on a full-time basis and will be registered with both institutions from the commencement of their studies.

Students will be jointly supervised by expert scholars from both institutions and will spend no less than 18 months in each institution. Each student will be required to complete only one single piece of research to fulfil the award requirements of the two institutions.

Eligibility criteria

Open to any UK or international candidates.

Applicants will need to meet the PhD entry requirements of both institutions.

Standard entry requirements

SHTM Surrey's standard entry requirements can be found on the Hospitality, Tourism, Transport and Events PhD programme page.

Additionally, applicants should have a topic that aligns with one or more of SHTM's strategic research centres and at least two years of work experience, including a minimum of one year industry/policy/relevant experience.

Applicants for the dual PhD studentships will need to make applications to both institutions.

University of Surrey

When making an application to Surrey via the Hospitality, Tourism, Transport and Events PhD programme page, applicants will need to clearly state in the online application that they are applying for this dual PhD programme and whether they would choose Surrey as the home Institution. The deadline for submitting applications to Surrey as the home institution is 19 January 2026.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

When making an application to Hong Kong PolyU via the RPgAdmission system, applicants should select the 'Dual PhD Degree Programmes' option, specify their proposed supervisors at both institutions and provide accurate information in the 'Programme' section of their online applications. Applicants should also inform PolyU SHTM by email of their application numbers and whether they would choose PolyU as the Home University. The deadline for submitting applications to Hong Kong PolyU as the Home University is 1 December 2025 (A HK$500 application fee will be chargeable by PolyU).
