About
The development of fault-tolerant quantum computing is one of the most coveted aims of quantum technology. It will bring about a revolution that will tackle global societal challenges. Fault-tolerance is defined as the scenario when quantum error correction codes function efficiently to detect and correct a significant number of errors. This project will focus on developing the quantum control building blocks for implementing low-overhead quantum error correction on trapped ions-based quantum processors. Quantum control techniques can open bottlenecks to scalability by reducing the number of operations, enhancing the robustness of gates, and mitigating the effects of noise. The research will upon strengths in the quantum control modelling at the University of Surrey (UoS) and the expertise in experimental quantum computing at the National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC). The research will involve periods of theoretical development at the UoS and experimental development at the NQCC.
Eligibility criteria
Desired experience: engagement with quantum science and/or quantum computing through projects and/or additional study. Experience with atomic physics or quantum/classical codes would be particularly beneficial.
Open to candidates who pay UK/home rate fees. See UKCISA for further information.
You will need to meet the minimum entry requirements for our Physics PhD programme.
How to apply
Applications should be submitted via the Physics PhD programme page. In place of a research proposal you should upload a document stating the title of the project that you wish to apply for and the name of the relevant supervisor.
