From Bond to the suffragettes: free family concert hosted by the University of Surrey
From the iconic scores of James Bond and Jurassic Park to the music of Dame Ethel Smyth (1858–1944), the famous Surrey-based composer and leading figure in the women's suffrage movement, families across the county and beyond are invited to a special intergenerational concert hosted by the University of Surrey.

Odaline de la Martinez
On the afternoon of Saturday 15 November, Beyond words: how music creates meaning will bring together University musicians and local performers for a free orchestral concert exploring music's power to inspire, connect and move us. The programme will take audiences on a journey through history – with moments of drama, joy and nostalgia – reminding us of the role music plays in all our lives.
Cuban-American composer and conductor Odaline de la Martinez, honorary visiting professor at Surrey, will also conduct one of her own pieces.
The event is part of Being Human Festival 2025 – the UK's national festival of the humanities – and will be held at Guildford United Reformed Church, 83 Portsmouth Road, GU2 4BS from 3-5:30pm on Saturday 15 November. All ages welcome, recommended for children from 7+.
Chris Wiley, concert organiser and Head of Music and Media at the University of Surrey, said:
"Music has a unique way of speaking to every generation at once. We want to share that experience through this concert, whether it's the thrill of a film score, the pride of hearing music that shaped social change or the celebration of local history through the composer Ethel Smyth and the music we will be premiering.
"During a 30-minute interval, you'll be able to try out selected instruments, facilitated by our Music Hub Partner, Surrey Arts. You’ll also have the opportunity to meet the musicians and reflect on the music you hear and what it means to you. We’d like everyone who comes along and brings their families to leave reminded of just how powerful music can be."
