New international project transforms schistosomiasis planning through trusted AI enablement and advanced modelling
A project to tackle schistosomiasis – a devastating tropical disease that affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide – has secured $1.5 million from the Gates Foundation. Researchers from the University of Surrey will use the funding to support the development of AI-powered planning tools that help countries deliver more effective control programmes.
The international project, Operationalising Schistosomiasis Modelling to Support In-Country Program Development (OR-SCH), will combine advanced disease modelling with AI to help policymakers decide where, when and how to target treatment programmes based on local needs and resources.
Schistosomiasis is caused by parasitic worms spread through contaminated freshwater. While mass treatment programmes have significantly reduced infections in many countries, deciding the most effective way to control or eliminate the disease remains a major challenge.
Researchers from Surrey's Institute for People-Centred AI and School of Veterinary Medicine will improve existing models that forecast how schistosomiasis spreads by accounting for real-world factors such as infection rates, workforce capacity, budgets and treatment coverage. This will enable governments and public health organisations to identify the most effective approach before implementation.
A central innovation of the project is an AI-powered decision-support tool that allows programme managers to explore different scenarios and receive clear, evidence-based recommendations without needing specialist expertise in mathematical modelling. The aim is to make complex scientific models more accessible, transparent and practical for those responsible for planning disease control programmes.
Alongside supporting national decision-making, the project will contribute evidence to the World Health Organization (WHO), helping to inform future guidance on when countries should begin or end treatment programmes, how progress towards eliminating the disease should be measured and the most effective ways to monitor infections.
