Recent Surrey graduate named National Grid Graduate of the Year

Hayley Wren, a Surrey Electronic Engineering BEng student who graduated in 2024, received her accolade in November 2025.

It was a proud moment for Surrey alumni Hayley Wren, who won the National Grid Graduate of the Year award 2025. Hayley joined the energy infrastructure giants in September 2024.

She said: "I feel very privileged to have been awarded ‘Graduate of the Year’ as part of our National Grid CND & ID departmental event earlier this week. This wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support of the Workforce Strategy team, who I am incredibly grateful to work alongside. More thanks goes out to my fellow graduates within the cohort, and huge congratulations for the other award winners!"

Hayley's award follows her stellar academic career at Surrey, where she graduated with a 1st class degree in Electronic Engineering in 2024. During her degree she undertook a split placement year, spending eight months as an electrical engineer at Phillips 66 in Lincolnshire, and eight months as a Homecharge Operations Project Manager at Pod Point in London.

A passionate advocate for inclusivity and diversity within engineering, Hayley is also a committed member of the Women in Engineering Society. And despite being relatively new into industry herself, she's already engaging and encouraging the next generation of electrical engineers with her education outreach volunteer work.
