Shape the future of communication with Surrey’s new MSc in Global Communication Management and AI

Will AI replace translators – or change the work they do? And who will manage communication across languages and cultures in an AI-enabled world?

A recent BBC article, How long will humans be needed for translation?, captures a debate that is becoming increasingly important for the language services industry. AI tools are already widely used for translation. Whether they will ever operate fully autonomously across a wide range of languages and contexts is doubted by many communication experts and remains, at the very least, an open question.

“What is not in doubt, however, is that organisations need
people who can manage multilingual workflows and make informed decisions about how communication is planned, delivered and evaluated across languages, cultures and markets.”

Our new MSc Global Communication Management and AI, launching at the University of Surrey in September 2027, is designed to develop these capabilities. Professor Sabine Braun, Professor of Translation Studies, explains:

"Students will learn to tackle real-world challenges, such as running multilingual campaigns and events, managing translation and localisation across markets, adapting global messages to local linguistic and cultural contexts, and developing sustainable multilingual and intercultural communication solutions for public services."

The programme will prepare students to:

  • Develop strategies for communication across languages, cultures and markets.
  • Design and manage AI-enabled workflows that combine human expertise with AI where appropriate.
  • Evaluate communication needs and select suitable solutions for different contexts.
  • Oversee quality, governance and ethical practice in multilingual communication.
  • Lead teams and organisations through the changing landscape of global communication.

Complementing our existing master's degrees in translation and interpreting in the Centre for Translation Studies (CTS), which incorporate critical AI literacy for language professionals, this programme offers a broader perspective on the strategic management of communication across languages and cultures. It is designed for graduates from backgrounds including languages, translation, communication, business, management, marketing and AI.

The future of global communication is not just about what AI can do. It is about enabling people and organisations to connect, learn, work and trade across languages and cultures. Learn from award-winning experts in multilingual communication in the Centre for Translation Studies at Surrey.
