Six Surrey colleagues to join Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2029 panels

Six members of the University of Surrey community, ranging in specialisms from Computer Science to Business and Management, have been appointed to the national panels which will lead research assessments through the REF 2029 process. Last completed in 2021, the REF system assesses the quality of research in Higher Education institutions in the UK. The assessment outcomes are used to inform the allocation of around £2 billion per year of public funding for universities’ research.

Professors Nishanth Sastry, Ravi Silva, Harris Dellas, Ali Emrouznejad, Ian Brunton-Smith and Director, Research, Innovation and Impact, Gill Fairbairn were appointed as members of panels and will take a key role in assessing UK research and supporting the Higher Education sector.

Having such strong representation on the panels highlights the strong reputation of Surrey’s research and academics, representing the University's impactful research culture on a national scale.

It’s been a privilege to work with the sector bodies and panel chairs on this new, open recruitment approach. It’s been inspiring to see the depth, strength, and commitment of the UK’s research community, and I’m very much looking forward to welcoming the new panel members to the team.  Rebecca Fairbairn, REF Director
