Surrey delivers on jobs promise for its graduates – new figures confirm

Training future-ready leaders and thinkers who go on to make an impact in their chosen field is a key priority for the University of Surrey – and the latest independent Graduate Outcomes Survey shows that it is delivering on this commitment.

The survey, published by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), collects data from nearly 400,000 graduates across the UK, measuring what they are doing 15 months after graduation. This year’s results show that 81.35 per cent of Surrey graduates go into ‘highly skilled’ employment, as defined by the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system, placing Surrey 13th in the UK*, and second only to the University of Oxford in the South East of England*. Surrey is a consistent high performer in Graduate Outcomes, now delivering a top-15 performance every year for the last five years.

The survey also found that 94.3 per cent of Surrey graduates are in employment or further study.

We are proud of every graduate whose success is reflected in this year’s results. They are a credit to our community and we are delighted to see so many go on to meaningful, skilled roles. Employability is a cornerstone of our learning community – part of our DNA as a University. Over 60 years ago we became one of the first universities to offer a Professional Training Year, and many students still spend a year working in industry today.

We’re committed to unlocking the potential of every student, equipping them with the tools and skills necessary for success not only in university but also in their future careers. In this year’s National Student Survey, we were also delighted to secure the third highest score in the UK (89.8%) when students were asked if they believed their course had developed the knowledge and skills that they need for their future. Buoyed by this feedback, we’ll continue to strive to ensure we’re preparing our students to make a difference in the world.

Surrey’s outcomes compare favourably with sector averages, and the latest, separate, Longitudinal Education Outcomes (LEO) data shows that 91.8 per cent of Surrey graduates are in work or further study five years after graduation, above the averages for comparable universities and Russell Group institutions.
