Surrey at the Transport Research Arena
The Transport Research Arena (TRA) is the largest European conference focusing on transport, which showcases leading research projects funded by Horizon Europe.
Dr Nikolas Thomopoulos represented Surrey at TRA 2026 held in Budapest, presenting outputs of his research collaboration with international experts from Slovenia. As a visiting scholar at the University of Ljubljana and as the Working Group 4 Leader of BOPALiM (Building Opportunities for Participation and Accessibility through Lifelong community Mobility), Dr Thomopoulos shared knowledge about the digital driving support study hosted at Surrey to form new collaborations with policy makers and practitioners across Europe.
This bi-annual conference participation was a unique opportunity to generate impact about research at Surrey based on past and ongoing work, whilst contributing to meet broader University goals such as successful bidding for large grants. TRA 2026 attendees renewed their commitment to share international outputs at TRA 2028 in Milan.
Dr Thomopoulos commented:
“Participating in large international conferences is of paramount importance and allows to position Surrey as a strong partner for future external bids. These events underline the importance of undertaking key roles at international networks funded by Horizon Europe, e.g. Working Group Leader of BOPALiM, to be able to actively join and contribute to TRA 2026. These activities aid in raising the Surrey profile and creating future opportunities for colleagues, particularly for early career academics”.
