What You Need to Know About the UK Immigration White Paper

The UK Government recently released its Immigration White Paper in May 2025, outlining proposed changes to immigration policies for international students. We’re pleased to share that the Graduate Route – which allows international students to remain in the UK after completing their studies – will be retained.

Key updates you should know:

Graduate Route (Post-Study Work Visa)

The Graduate Immigration Route will continue to allow graduates to stay in the UK for 18 months after completing their degree.

This route is aimed at helping you transition into graduate-level employment.

At Surrey, 94% of our international graduates are in employment or further study within 15 months of graduation – earning an average salary of £35,795. (Graduate Destinations survey 2024, HESA)

Agent Quality Framework (AQF)

Surrey signed the Agent Quality Framework pledge in 2024, demonstrating our commitment to ethical and transparent recruitment practices.

We will continue to work closely with our partners and agents to ensure you receive reliable support when applying.

Supporting Student Entrepreneurship

The Government plans to enhance the Innovator Founder visa, making it easier for entrepreneurial students to stay in the UK and build their businesses after graduation.

If you’re planning to launch a start-up, this could be a valuable pathway to continue your career in the UK.

Staying informed

Rebecca Hill, our Director of International Recruitment, recently discussed these developments in the House of Lords, reinforcing Surrey’s voice in shaping the future of international education in the UK.

Although these are proposed changes, there is currently no confirmed timeline for when they will come into effect. We are actively engaging in discussions and will keep you updated every step of the way.
