Excursion and walking tour

We are delighted to offer pre-conference activities on Tuesday 4 July 2023, after the PhD research clinics. Please note these are based on a first come first served basis as places are limited.

Guildford

The Guildford story (a guided walking tour by Guildford town guides)

Tuesday 4 July 2023, 2pm - 3pm, £5 donation.

A 60-minute guided walking tour around Guildford, a town with a history of intrigue, achievement and discovery stretching back over 1,000 years. You will learn about King John, Lewis Carroll, Alan Turing and many other celebrated people who knew the town well.

Guildford Town Guides are all volunteers and are not paid. A £5 donation is requested. All donations go in full to their charity of the year: Skillway (skillway.org.uk), which supports young people who have struggled academically at school.

Coach trip to Chawton House including pub lunch

Tuesday 4 July 2023, 12:15pm - 5:15pm, £60.

A pre-paid coach trip to a traditional English Gastropub, French Horn (frenchhorn.co.uk), for a two-course meal and choice of drink, before heading to visit the historic Elizabethan Manor house and gardens at Chawton house. This was the home of the famous writer Jane Austen’s brother and known to Jane as the ‘Great House’. Jane lived in a cottage on his estate and would stroll up to ‘dawdle away’ many an hour in the grand Elizabethan manor and its picturesque gardens.

Should delegates wish to visit Jane’s cottage during the day it is a 5-minute walk from the Great House. Please note this is not included in the price of the trip.

SURREY2023 Guildford Pub Crawl

Tuesday (4 July) starting at 17:00, led by Professors David Airey, Larry Dwyer, and Leo Jago

 

5pm: The King’s Head

Walk up from the bottom of Guildford High Street and take the first turning on the right into Quarry Street. The King’s Head is on the left at the corner of Quarry Street and Castle Street.

6pm: The Three Pigeons

From the King’s Head return to the High Street and walk up to the top of the High Street. The Three Pigeons is on the left, opposite a red brick church.

7pm: The Royal Oak

From the Three Pigeons, cross the road and take a footpath beside the church. The footpath is fairly steep upwards. At the top of the path, where it turns right you will find the Royal Oak.

8pm: The March Hare

Leave the Royal Oak from the door at the opposite side of the building from the door you entered. Turn right down this road and the March Hare is on the left hand side at the first junction.
